BIOGRAPHY
My son Liam presented with severe eczema from 2 and a half weeks of age with his first hospital admission at 5 weeks due to a staf infection. He went on to have a total of 7 admissions due to his eczema.
At four months he developed colitis from his bowel which they believe was due to allergies so breastfeeding was stopped and an elemental formula was introduced.
At 6 months when solids were started, he developed colitis and after 7 weeks of diarrhea we were admitted back into hospital for further investigations. My son went on to total parental nutrition and was given the diagnosis of auto immune entropathy.
He was discharged after us living in the hospital for four months and was gastric fed until recently when a stomach peg was inserted. He does not eat any foods orally and his speech is delayed.
He has now developed alopecia and his diagnosis has since been changed to IPEX where it is likely he will develop endocrine problems including diabetes. It is more than likely that he will require a bone marrow transplant to enable a chance of having a longer life expectancy as with this disease most children do not live beyond the age of 3 without radical medical intervention.
He is currently been managed with a host of drugs including immune suppression which makes an increase risk to life threatening infections and therefore cannot be placed in child care facilities of any kind.
All this aside, he is my love and my life and I hope he continues to smile and laugh and bring happiness to those around him!
