BIOGRAPHY
Cooper was born at 30 weeks gestation weighing 1.475kgs. We were happy to have gotten this far as our last child was born at 23 weeks.
Cooper was going great and got home on 13/2/11. The following day at home we noticed he wasn't himself and took him back to hospital. He was diagnosed that night with bacterial meningitis. They could see abscesses on his brain by this stage already. He was intubated for just over a week and fought the infection with four different antibiotics.
We were told within the next few weeks that our much wanted baby would never be able to walk or talk. We were encouraged not to continue treatment, but Cooper continued to fight. We managed to get him home again on 28/3/11.
He was home for two weeks to the day when we noticed his head was very enlarged. Off to the GP and then to the hospital again. Scans and a MRI showed he now had Hydrocephalus. There was a suspicious spot that may have been infection so the first treatment was an external drain, a few days later he then had a VP shunt inserted. Now a week after the shunt insertion we are still in hospital as he still has what they call boggy spots. Everytime they take the pressure bandage off his fluid builds up even more in his head. Still waiting to see if this resolves or more surgery is needed. Docors are saying that they don't expect him to live beyond 24months.
